Türkiye's Black Sea Plateaus by Cable Car: Ordu's Boztepe and Beyond
Boztepe: Ordu's Easy Highland Escape
Just a few minutes from Ordu's city centre, the Boztepe cable car lifts you from the seafront to a plateau 530 metres above sea level. The ride itself is a highlight, with the Black Sea stretching to the horizon and hazelnut orchards carpeting the slopes below. At the top, cool breezes and panoramic views await — no hiking boots needed.
Boztepe is perfect for families and anyone short on time. The cable car operates year-round (weather permitting) and the top station has viewing terraces, cafes and picnic areas. It's a stress-free way to taste highland air without a long trek.
As you step off, the first thing you'll notice is the drop in temperature — even in summer, it's pleasantly cool up here. Locals come to escape the heat, and you'll understand why.
Tea, Breakfast and Black Sea Hospitality
No visit to the Black Sea is complete without tea. At the top, simple teahouses serve çay in tulip-shaped glasses, often with a view that makes the drink taste even better. The ritual is unhurried — sip, chat, and watch the clouds roll over the ridges.
For a proper start to the day, seek out a local breakfast spot. Expect serpme kahvaltı (a spread of cheeses, olives, jams, eggs and fresh bread), often accompanied by muhlama — a gooey cornmeal and cheese dish that's pure comfort. The warmth of the people is as memorable as the food; don't be surprised if you're invited to join a table.
Village hospitality here is genuine and unpretentious. Whether you're buying hazelnuts from a roadside stall or asking for directions, you'll be met with patience and a smile.
Beyond Boztepe: Highland Villages and Plateaus
While Boztepe is the easiest introduction, the surrounding highlands offer more. From Ordu, you can take short drives (or local minibuses) to villages like Çambaşı and Kabadüz, where traditional wooden houses cling to green slopes. These areas are part of the larger Pontic Mountains range, dotted with yaylas (highland pastures) that come alive in summer.
For a deeper dive, consider visiting the Aybastı Perşembe Yaylası, a famous plateau known for its festivals and sweeping vistas. It's a bit further afield but still accessible by car. The journey itself is scenic, winding through hazelnut orchards and tea plantations.

Practical Logistics: Getting There and Around
Ordu is served by Ordu-Giresun Airport (OGU), about 30 minutes from the city centre. From the airport, take a taxi or shuttle to the cable car station (Altınordu district). The cable car runs frequently; tickets are affordable and can be bought at the station.
If you're driving, the ride to Boztepe is well signposted. Parking is available near the lower station. For those relying on public transport, city buses and dolmuş (shared minibuses) connect the centre to the cable car.
Outside Boztepe, exploring the highlands is easiest with a car. Renting a car gives you flexibility, but guided tours are also available from Ordu. For itinerary ideas, see our itineraries.
When to Go: Seasonal Weather and What to Expect
The Black Sea coast is lush and humid year-round, but the highlands have distinct seasons. Summer (June–September) is the most popular time: warm on the coast, cool and refreshing on the plateau, with long daylight hours. This is also when yayla festivals happen.
Spring (April–May) brings wildflowers and misty mornings, while autumn (October–November) offers golden hazelnut harvests and fewer crowds. Winters can be snowy and cold at altitude, and the cable car may close in harsh weather — check ahead if visiting between December and February.
Whatever the season, pack layers. The temperature can drop quickly as you ascend, and rain showers are common. For a month-by-month guide, visit our best time to visit page.
Making the Most of Your Visit
To fully enjoy Boztepe and the surrounding highlands, allow at least half a day for the cable car and plateau. If you want to explore villages, plan a full day or an overnight stay. Ordu itself has a pleasant seaside promenade and a few hotels.
Remember that the cable car is a popular local attraction, so weekends and holidays can be busy. Go early in the morning for quieter views and fresher air. And don't forget your camera — the panorama is one of the best on the Black Sea coast.
