Istanbul in 3 Days: Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque & Bosphorus Classics

This is the itinerary for a first visit to Istanbul: the handful of sights that genuinely justify their fame, arranged so you're not crossing the city back and forth. Day one stays entirely inside the Sultanahmet historic peninsula, home to the Byzantine and Ottoman landmarks within a 10-minute walk of each other. Day two moves to the bazaars and a Bosphorus crossing, giving you both the shopping-district energy and the water views that define the city. Day three is a lighter half-day in Beyoğlu before you fly out. We've paced this for a couple or pair of friends with average walking stamina and no interest in rushing through queues — expect a genuinely full but not exhausting three days. Entry fees and opening-hour policies at several Istanbul landmarks have changed more than once in recent years (Hagia Sophia's visitor entry in particular), so treat the cost notes below as typical rather than guaranteed, and double check hours the day before you go.

Day 1 — Sultanahmet: The Historic Peninsula

Hagia Sophia

09:001 hr

The 6th-century Byzantine cathedral turned mosque turned museum turned mosque again — one of the most architecturally influential buildings in the world.

Sultanahmet💰 ~$25 for non-worship visitor entry (a paid visitor lane was introduced in 2024; free during prayer for worshippers) — verify current price/hours before you go

Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque)

45 min

Six minarets and cascading domes, named for the blue İznik tiles lining its interior. Still an active mosque.

Sultanahmet💰 Free

💡 Closed to visitors for roughly 90 minutes around each of the 5 daily prayers; modest dress and a headscarf for women are required (scarves are usually available on loan at the entrance).

Hippodrome of Constantinople

20 min

The former chariot-racing arena, now an open square holding the Egyptian Obelisk, the Serpent Column and the German Fountain.

Sultanahmet Square💰 Free

Lunch at a Sultanahmet lokanta

1 hr

A traditional Ottoman/Turkish home-style restaurant (lokanta) — think lentil soup, stewed vegetables, İskender kebap.

Sultanahmet💰 $10–15 per person, typical

Topkapi Palace

2.5–3 hrs

The Ottoman sultans' primary residence for 400 years; the Harem quarters and the Imperial Treasury are worth the separate add-on tickets.

Sultanahmet💰 ~$30 combined entry + Harem, typical

Basilica Cistern

18:0040 min

A 6th-century underground reservoir with over 300 columns, atmospherically lit — including the famous Medusa-head column bases.

Day 2 — Grand Bazaar, Süleymaniye & the Bosphorus

Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı)

09:301.5 hrs

One of the world's oldest and largest covered markets — over 4,000 shops. Go for the atmosphere even if you don't buy anything; bargaining is expected.

Beyazıt💰 Free entry

Süleymaniye Mosque

45 min

Architect Sinan's masterpiece, commissioned by Süleyman the Magnificent, with sweeping views over the Golden Horn from its courtyard.

Süleymaniye💰 Free

Spice Bazaar (Egyptian Bazaar)

A smaller, more concentrated market for Turkish delight, spices, tea and dried fruit — good for gifts.

15:001.5–2 hrs

A boat trip along the strait separating Europe and Asia, past waterfront palaces and the Bosphorus bridges.

Eminönü pier💰 Public Şehir Hatları ferry ~$5–10, or a guided private tour boat ~$20–25

💡 The public ferry is the better-value option and still hits the same scenery; private tours add commentary and flexible timing.

Dinner in Karaköy or Galata

1.5 hrs

Karaköy's waterfront streets have some of the city's better modern Turkish and seafood restaurants.

Karaköy💰 $20–30 per person, typical

Galata Tower at sunset

1.5 hrs

The 19th-century Ottoman palace built in a European Baroque style — the sultans' answer to Versailles, on the Bosphorus shore.

Beşiktaş💰 ~$25, typical
